Etymology: Oreonectes: Greek, oreos = mountain + Greek, nekton = swimmer (Ref. 45335);  translucens: The specific epithet comes from the Latin word for transparent, referring to the appearance of this species when fresh (Ref. 78629).

Dorsal soft rays (total): 11; Anal soft rays: 9; Vertebrae: 36. Diagnosed from its congeners by having the following combination of characters: vestigial eyes; origin of dorsal fin and pelvic fin vertically opposite each other; well-developed dorsal crest and ventral crest; entire body lacking scales and color (Ref. 78629).
