Etymology: Symphysanodon: Greek, syn, symphysis = grown together + Greek, physis = growth body form + Greek, odous = teeth; related to few teeth which are located over the area where the two jaws meet (Ref. 45335);  disii: Named for Dr. Ahmad M Disi, University of Jordan.

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Dorsal spines (total): 9; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 7; Vertebrae: 25. This species differs from its congeners in having the following characters: D IX, 10; A III, 7; lateral line with tubed scales 50; gill rakers 12 + 25 = 37; relatively deep body, 32% of SL; first pelvic-fin ray slightly produced, not extending to anus; the pectoral fin reaching a vertical through base of last dorsal spine; depressed anal-fin length, 32% of SL; deeply forked caudal fin with both lobes produced into filaments (Ref. 75640).
