Etymology: Parananochromis: Greek, para = the side of + Latin, nannus = small + Greek, chromis = a fish, perhaps a perch (Ref. 45335); brevirostris: From the Latin brevis, short and rostrum, beak or snout, in reference to the short, rounded snout of the species (Ref. 50579).

Africa: Ivindo and Ogowe drainages in Gabon (Ref. 50579, 81260, 97361). Also reported from the Ntem River (Ref. 50579, 81260), but these reports are misidentifications for Parananochromis elobatus (Ref. 97361).

Cheek naked or with a single scale row under eye (Ref. 81260). Anterior chest naked (Ref. 50579, 81260). 1-3 scales between base of pectoral and pelvic fins; well-developed dorsal fin lappets (Ref. 81260).
Inhabits small forest creeks and streams (Ref. 50579). Monogamous, biparental, substrate spawner displaying some degree of sexual dichromatism (Ref. 81260).
