Etymology: Schistura: Greek, schizein = to divide + Greek, oura = tail; an allusion to forked caudal fins (Ref. 45335);  maepaiensis: Named for Mae Nam Mae Pai, where the species was first collected (Ref. 39226).   More on author: Kottelat.

Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-14; Anal soft rays: 8. Distinguished by its peculiar color pattern consisting of 10-13 not very regular bars outlined by darker margins; processus dentiformis present; 9+8 branched caudal rays; 9-10 1/2 branched dorsal rays; males with a suborbital flap; complete lateral line; axillary pelvic lobe present; eye diameter larger than or equal to interorbital width; black basal caudal bar dissociated, forming two spots (Ref. 39226).

Found in stream with moderate to swift current over boulders and pebbles. A female measuring 4.18 cm SL contains ovulae about 0.6 mm in diameter. Its stomach contents are Diptera larvae and worms, both of very small size (Ref. 39226).
