Freshwater; demersal; pH range: 7.4 - 8.4; dH range: 7 - 30; depth range 3 - 20 m. Tropical; 23°C - 27°C (Ref. 12468), preferred ?; 9°S - 15°S
Africa: Endemic to Lake Malawi. Widespread south of Ruarwe on the western side of the lake and as far north as Makanjila on the eastern side.

Inhabits shallow rocky habitats. Feeds by using the teeth to comb loose algae from the substrate (Ref. 5595).
