More information on Turbidity of the Skin (Marine fish)
Main Ref: 41806
Disease type: Parasitic infestations (protozoa, worms, etc.)
Disease name: Turbidity of the Skin (Marine fish)
Other names: Brooklynella infection
Caus. agent: Brooklynella hostilis
Group:
Part of body and/or behavior affected by disease:
Skins and/or fins  Belly  Swimming behavior
 Gills  Anus  Other behavior
 Eyes  Viscera Afflicted  Other symptoms
Fish affected: Tropical marine fish
Symptoms: Symptoms include turbidity of the skin, sometimes with dark slimy layers hanging like strings, eye cloudiness, breathing difficulties with gill cover spreaded. The infected fish becomes listless, lose their appetite, lie on the bottom or near the surface gasping for air. Symptoms cannot be observe in the first stages of the disease. After a few days the infected fish displays clear symptoms. The fish becomes weak, has trouble breathing and exhibits a strong turbidity of the skin. Secondry bacterial infection can be seen in severely infected fish, red skin patches, wounds, skin and fin rot, typical hemorrhaging on the gills.
Treatments: The combination of Formaldehyde (1 drop/4-5 l or 1 ml/100 l) and Malachite green (Stock solution: 5.0 g/l of distilled water; beginning dose: 1 ml or 20-25 drops/100) has a good result. Another treatment, Quinacrine (100-250 mg/100 l over 10 days) sometimes has good results, but can be toxic to weaker fish. The strongest fish should be treated in freshwater baths in order to kill as many parasites as possible. For secondary bacterial infection, antibacterial agents such as nifurpirinol, neomycin, sulfonamide or Linco-Spectin can be use.
Prophylaxis:
Remarks: This parasite is frequently occuring in tropical marine fish, and Chilodinella sp. is its counterpart in freshwater fish. This parasite can also be found in healthy fish when they are suddenly stressed by poor environmental conditions, fights, or incomplete diet.
