The Commission is divided into two national sections, with commissioners appointed by each nation - USA and Canada. The PSC is the main implementing body of the "Pacific Salmon Treaty".
The purpose of the Treaty is to facilitate cooperation in the management, research and enhancement of Pacific salmon stocks; the conservation principle obliges the two parties to prevent overfishing and provide for optimum production; the equity principle - to receive fishery benefits equivalent to the production of salmon from its own rivers, that is, interceptions of salmon by two countries should be balanced; conservation and equitable harvest of salmon stocks. Species covered by the treaty: Sockeye, Pink, Chum, Chinook, Coho, Steelhead. |
