Some authors consider the eastern Baltic population as valid subspecies Clupea harengus membras. North Atlantic: eastern part of the Baltic Sea east of the line passing from the southern extremity of Oland Island to the Bay of Danzig, as well as the Gulfs of Finland and Bothnia.
