Vertebrae: 26. Color of adults white with a broad brown bar on the head; 3 brownish yellow bars on the body; a large black saddle on the caudal peduncle (lacking in juveniles); and orange-yellow spinous portion on dorsal fin. Young with a large elliptical black spot basally and below posterior half of the soft part of dorsal fin, extending onto anterior part of the caudal peduncle, followed by a bright white spot. Moderately-deep body, 2.1-2.35 in SL. Tubed lateral line scales, 19-21, but usually 20 (Ref. 33558).
Feeds on benthic algae (Ref. 89972). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhere to the substrate (Ref. 205). Males guard and aerate the eggs (Ref. 205).
