Africa: upper Zambezi and Okavango River systems (Ref. 7248). Also reported from the Kwilu River (middle Congo River basin) in Democratic Republic of the Congo (Ref. 114247).

Favors well-vegetated margins of rivers and lagoons, floodplain pools and backwaters. Feeds on insects and periphyton. Breeds in summer, laying eggs on submerged vegetation (Ref. 7248).
