Etymology of specific name : 
 
Greek, acanthos = "spine" or "thorn" + Greek, nectes = "swimmer"; refers to the lateral branching spines of the dorsal fin elements; "rufus" = adjectival and is given for the species' reddish color (Ref. 35802).
