Definition of Term

sharks
(english) A subgroup of cartilaginous fishes; usually large, fast swimming, fish-shaped predators. The modern sharks are classified in the Selachii, together with the skates and rays they form the Neoselachii, together with a number of fossil groups, the Elasmobranchii, and together with chimaeras, the Chondrichthyes that gather all the cartilaginous fishes. (french) Un sous-groupe de poissons cartilagineux; habituellement grands, à nage rapide, à la forme type de poissons prédateurs. Les requins modernes sont classés dans les Selachii, avec les raies ils forment les Neoselachii, avec un certain nombre de groupes fossiles, les Elasmobranchii, et avec Chimères, les Chondrichthyes qui comprennent donc tous les poissons cartilagineux.
