Definition of Term

generation
(english) The average age of parents of newborn individuals within the population. Greater than the age at first breeding, except in species that spawn only once. Generation time is calculated as (age of maturity / fishing mortality rate) + 1. Where generation length varies under threat, the more natural, i.e., pre-disturbance, generation length shoud be used. (french) Âge moyen des parents dans la population. Supérieur à l'âge de première ponte, sauf chez les espèces qui ne pondent qu'une fois. L'âge de la génération est calculé selon la formule : (âge de maturité / taux de mortalité due à la pêche) + 1. (See also: population, reproduction, maturity)
