 Family:  Serranidae (Sea basses: groupers and fairy basslets), subfamily: Serraninae
 Max. size:  18 cm TL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  reef-associated; depth range 6 - 61 m
 Distribution:  Eastern Pacific: Gulf of California to Peru, including the Galapagos Islands.
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 10-10; Dorsal soft rays (total): 12-12; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 7-7
 Biology:  Inhabits rocky bottoms or isolated reefs (Ref. 9342); usually found near patch reefs on sandy or broken-shell bottoms. Solitary and diurnal. Juveniles under laboratory conditions can tolerate low water temperatures, e.g. 9.4°C (Ref. 6852).
