 Max. size:  2.7 cm SL (male/unsexed)
 Environment:  demersal
 Distribution:  Indian Ocean: Red Sea to Natal, South Africa; including the Comoros and St. Brandon Shoals; not recorded from the Gulf of Oman,
 Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 14-15; Dorsal soft rays (total): 8-10; Anal spines: 1-1; Anal soft rays: 16-17. Diagnosis: Dorsal fins III + XI-XIII + 8-10 (usually III + XII + 9); anal fin I, 16-17 (usually 16 rays); pectoral fin 15: 2-3 + 5-6 + 7 (usually 2+6+7). Lateral line, pored scales 11-12, notched scales 20-22 (usually 22), starting at next scale row below the end of the pored series; total lateral scales 29-30; transverse scales 3/6; nape with scales, abdomen scales cycloid thin, single row of scales at base of pectoral fin. Body depth 4.4-5.2 in SL. Vertebrae 10 + 22-23. Dentary pores 3 + 2 + 3 ; head 3.3-3.9 in SL; eye 2.8-3.6 in head length; orbital margin serrated finely; orbital cirrus minute, about half the diameter of pupil, may be rounded or divided; supratemporal sensory canal crescent-shaped; first dorsal fin about equal in height to second in females, higher in males. Key features are: Body stripes 4-5 diagonal dark brown, dorsal and caudal fins reddish, caudal peduncle with dark bar (Ref. 5497, 57774, 88983).
 Biology:  This species is uncommon (Ref. 57774) and very secretive. Adults live in sheltered lagoons with many nooks and crannies, in close association with hard corals (Ref. 88983). Eggs are hemispherical and covered with numerous sticky threads that anchor them in the algae on the nesting sites (Ref. 240). Larvae are planktonic which occur primarily in shallow, nearshore waters (Ref. 94114).
